The Appaloosa – More Than Just a Colour

The Appaloosa is a distinct breed, not simply a colour pattern. To ensure the ongoing preservation of the breed, the AAA Ltd requires DNA parent verification and genetic testing, along with additional eligibility criteria outlined in the AAA Ltd Rule Book.

As part of the registration process, hair samples (pulled from the mane) are submitted for testing. This includes parent verification and a comprehensive 7-panel genetic test, screening for:

  • HYPP – Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis

  • HERDA – Hereditary Equine Regional Dermal Asthenia

  • OLWS – Overo Lethal White Foal Syndrome

  • PSSM1 – Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy

  • GBED – Glycogen Branching Enzyme Deficiency

  • MH – Malignant Hyperthermia

  • MYHM / IMM – Myosin-Heavy Chain Myopathy (formerly Immune-Mediated Myositis)

Appaloosa Pedigree Registry (APR)

APR recognises horses that carry a minimum of 7/8 Appaloosa breeding.

This registration concept is not only to celebrate the use of majority Appaloosa breeding, but to promote the use of both coloured and solid horses in the breeding program rather than continual use of outcrossing which dilutes the appaloosa characteristic and colour

The use of solid coloured Appaloosas in a breeding program can be very beneficial, which will become more obvious as we learn more about the Appaloosa gene.

So, how do you know if your horse is eligible?

Finding out is as simple as checking your horses’ pedigree. Firstly, your horse must be registered with the AAA Ltd in one of the regular registries.

Eligibility for the APR Registry requires 7 of the 8 horses listed in the 4th generation of your horses’ pedigree to be Registered Appaloosas.

How to Apply

  • New registrations: Tick the APR option on the Registration Form, supply a 5-generation pedigree.

  • Already registered horses: Complete the APR Application Form from the Forms page and submit it with a 5-generation pedigree and existing Registration Card
(No fee currently applies for APR recording of already registered horses)
